He's one of the most imposing figures in rock, but Morrissey may have met his oratorial match in Stephen Colbert – or at least the Comedy Central comic's combative Republican alter ego.

The Smiths singer, who's just starting a lengthy US tour, showed off his Republican credentials, referring to the Queen's reign as "60 years of dictatorship", and dealt quite well with Colbert welcoming Johnny Marr on to the stage (he wasn't there).

He did, however, seem troubled by the host's questions about the ethics of meat eating: "Can I eat a lion? What about an animal that's already dead? Like a cow that's been sentenced to death for murder. Or a pig that commits suicide from listening to too many of your songs?"
