Supermarket giant Tesco has entered the energy market and is selling boilers online and in store.

Tesco, which is growing its product lines, from carpets to used cars and hairdressing, is hoping to attract customers with deals to reduce fuel bills.

It is thought it began selling boilers around three weeks ago under its Tesco Home Efficiency banner. It is offering deals to upgrade gas boilers with prices starting from £1,999 for a fully installed boiler.

Tesco, like many retailers, has suffered from the sharp drop in consumer spending and has tried to lure new customers and keep regular ones with deals including its Big Price Drop. Last Thursday, Tesco revealed its UK like-for-like sales fell 0.9 per cent in the 13 weeks to 26 November, and that its £500m price-cutting campaign had not improved sales as much as hoped. It was its fourth quarter in a row of falling sales.
