Russia seeks green Olympics Games tips

The team overseeing the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, is to meet its counterpart organising the London 2012 summer games to improve its economic and environmental standards.

Dmitry Chernyshenko, Sochi 2014's chief executive, said he would talk to the Olympic Delivery Authority and the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games about attempts to create a low-carbon event, in meetings in the first week of November.

There have been concerns that Russia would not be able to meet international environmental standards, as the country does not have an established sustainability industry. However, Mr Chernyshenko said that 10 of the venues would meet BREEAM standards, a key international award for green buildings. "I grew up in Sochi," he said. "I have friends from school here. I want to improve Sochi."

London 2012 is currently looking for up to 70,000 volunteers to help run the games.
