McDonald's trials all-you-can-eat fries and customisable burgers

A McDonald's in the US will be the first franchise to test all-you-can-eat fries when it opens this summer, according to reports.

The 6,500 square foot restaurant being built in St Joseph, Missouri, will have kiosks to take orders, allowing customers to customise their burgers and desserts.

“There really are hundreds of different choices to build the burger of your dreams. Once you’ve placed your order, you can find your seat because we’ll bring it out to you," Chris Habiger, whose family owns six McDonald's, told local news service News Press Now.

Mr Habiger has said his McDonald's will be "the McDonald's of the future", featuring interactive light board tables, tabletop video games with different gaming options and digital play.

But unlike other futuristic McDonald's, which have tried to appeal to a broader customer base by offering healthy options including couscous and quinoa, the St Joseph McDonald's is sticking to what it knows its customers really want: all-you-can-eat fries.

It's not yet clear how much the menu item will cost.

The fries will be brought to the table by waiters at the St Joseph restaurant. Mr Habinger has said that although the ordering process will be automated, he plans to hire 85 staff in the next few months.

The Independent has contacted McDonald's to ask if all-you-can-eat fries will appear on McDonald's menus elsewhere.

McDonald's franchises have featured many different menu items and store designs over the last year in an effort to turn around the company's fortunes after two straight years of declines.

All-day breakfasts proved a hit in October 2015, helping sales jump 5.7 per cent at US restaurants open more than a year in the fourth quarter of 2015.
