STOCKS CLOSED LOWER as jitters over China-Taiwan tensions and selling pressure on China Telecom (Hong Kong) outweighed expectations of improved unemployment figures. The Hang Seng finished down 98.11 points, or 0.72 per cent, at 13,447.13 in choppy trade, holding within a tight range of 13,550.64 to 13,395.46.

In the broader market, declines outnumbered advances 502 to 142 as China- related shares sustained heavy losses.
