Google's Superbowl 2020 advert

Google tugged hard at the heart strings with its latest advert, depicting the tale of an elderly man recalling fond memories of his late wife.

On Sunday evening, the new Google advert was shown during the Super Bowl American football championship game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Franscisco 49ers.

The short film opens with a visual of a Google search bar, as an instrumental version of A Great Big World’s “Say Something” plays in the background.

The words “how not to forget” are typed into the search bar, with one of the results being “to repeat a detail”.

The person behind the keyboard, an elderly man, then voices a request to Google Assistant, asking the virtual assistant to show him photographs of his wife, Loretta, who has passed away.

The elderly man makes various remarks while looking affectionately at the pictures, such as: “Remember, Loretta hated my moustache,” to which Google Assistant responds: “Ok, I’ll remember that.”

The widower reminisces on particular memories, including when he and Loretta visited Alaska, the many years they celebrated their anniversary and the fact that his wife would snort when she laughed.

After looking at various photographs and videos, a message appears from Google Assistant that says: “Here’s what you told me to remember.”

The virtual assistant then lists the many recollections the man has made about his wife, including how she used to hum showtunes, what her favourite flowers were and how she had the “most beautiful handwriting”.

“Remember, I’m the luckiest man in the world,” the elderly man says as the advert draws to a close.

The heartfelt sentiment of the advert left many Super Bowl viewers “in tears”, several whom expressed their admiration for it on Twitter and YouTube.

Love and loss beautifully portrayed in this #SuperBowl advert by @Google,” one person tweeted.

“I legit just sobbed at the Google commercial. Damn advert agency manipulative goons!” another commented.

One YouTube commenter disclosed that their mother passed away just last week and that they are currently staying with their father to help him “adjust to life without Mum”.

“My Dad and I were brought to tears by this commercial,” they said.

Another person found the advert reminded them of their wife, stating: “I straight started crying so hard when the commercial said she snorted when she laughed. My wife snorts when she laughs.”

During the Super Bowl, Jennifer Lopez and Shakira put on a show-stopping performance for the match’s halftime show.
