Charlotte, Harper and Liam: The most popular baby names of 2028

These are the must-have monikers of the future

Even if children are not on the agenda for you just yet, their prospective names are something that is likely to have crossed your mind.

After all, choosing the right one is no mean feat. Do you want your child to stand out from the crowd and have one of the most unique monikers in the classroom? Or do you opt for a traditional name that will stand the test of time?

To help you make your choice, baby names resource Nameberry has looked to the future to predict what the most popular monikers will be in 2028.

Using a formula based on Social Security data of more than 30,000 names used in the US over the past 10 years, the website created projections for the next decade.

It found that Charlotte, the name of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s second child, will rise to number one, followed by Amelia, Harper, Emma, Olivia and Evelyn.

Mia, Aria, Ava and Sofia are also predicted to enter the US top 10.

For boys, the experts predict that Liam will take the top spot followed by Mateo, Maverick, Noah, Lincoln and Lucas.

Henry, Theodore, Jaxon and Oliver also make the cut alongside unisex names such as Avery, Quinn, Sawyer and Parker.

“In general, popularity patterns follow regular patterns, rising and falling with the same precipitousness” said Pam Satran, co-creator and CEO of Nameberry.

“Names that get popular fast, usually thanks to a celebrity or a pop culture event, tend to fall just as fast. Beyonce, used for 105 baby girls in 2008, was used for no baby girls last year.

“And names that are popular over several years tend to stay that way for several more before starting a very gradual slide. Emma entered the top 10 in 2002, for instance, moving in and out of the number one spot but lingering in the top five, and we project it will still be in the top five in a decade.”

As for the monikers that won’t fare as well in 10 years time, Nameberry predicts that girls’ names such as Kaitlin, Ashlee, Rachael and Jasmin will slowly fade away.

Similarly, boys’ names including Aidan, Brenden, Sean and Jaydon are predicted to fall in popularity.

Earlier this year, Babycentre revealed the most popular baby names of 2018 so far.

Topping the girl’s chart, Olivia kept hold of the coveted number one spot for the fourth year running, followed by Sophia, Amelia, Lily, Emily, Ava, Isla, Aria, Mia and Isabella.

Meanwhile, Muhammed remained at the top for boys, with Oliver, Noah, George, Harry, Leo, Charlie, Jack, Freddie and Alfie also making it into the top 10.
