PUBLISHER David Campbell of Everyman Books is a little naive in thinking his offer of 250 classics to all state schools will be welcomed without qualification.

The Millennium Library is an excellent idea, but would have been even better if he'd thought to consult librarians, teachers, publishers, writers - maybe even a politician or two - and got them to draw up a list of 250 titles that might have had a better chance of actually being read.
