Retailer J Crew has launched extended sizes for its clothes with sizes up to 5X in an effort to be size-inclusive.

The new initiative, in collaboration with fashion label Universal Standard, features a 22-piece collection of “modern essentials for everybody.”

With pants, blouses, dresses, cardigans and tees available in a variety of prints and colours, the line offers an all-inclusive shopping experience for women - no matter what size.

Alexandra Waldman, co-founder of Universal Standard, said the collaboration of “modern, clean pieces” is “hopefully, going to make a lot of women very happy.”

In a press release, J Crew said they chose to collaborate with Universal Standard because of the company’s “highly technical approach to micro-grading by size to ensure that each design is tailored for the real, diverse spectrum of the American woman.”

And the new collection is just one of the company’s steps towards “breaking down barriers that keep tens of millions of women from participating in style.”

On J Crew’s website, where sizes in the collection range from XXS to 5X, shoppers can view the clothes on a variety of body types to better get a feel for how the clothes will look.

Although the announcement was just made, the brand has actually been offering plus sizes online for some time - a testament to the company’s desire to make sizing inclusion the norm.

In January, the retailer announced it was extending its denim line alongside company Madewell, to cater to sizes up to 35.

Since the announcement, fans of the retailers have praised the decision on social media.

“Now THIS is smart. Kudos @Jcrew and @universalstandard for extending a collaboration beyond product to expertise,” one person wrote.

Another said: “I’ve always wanted to wear J Crew stuff, and as a big girl, I didn’t think it would be possible unless I lost weight. Just bought a Universal Standard collab piece from J Crew and am giddy.

“The collection is simple, beautiful, and made of materials we need more of. Thank you.”
