Coronavirus: GMB weatherman Alex Beresford felt ‘powerless’ as step-grandmother died alone during lockdown

Good Morning Britain weatherman Alex Beresford has revealed he felt “powerless” as his step-grandmother died alone during the Covid-19 lockdown.

Mr Beresford, 39, said he felt “trapped” being unable to visit step-parents to comfort them after the death on Wednesday evening.

Announcing the news on Twitter, Mr Beresford said: “My lovely step-grandmother died on her own tonight! I can’t even go to my mums to hug her or my stepdad.

“They also can’t leave the house because they are vulnerable and I doubt they would let us in to pay our respects. I feel upset, trapped and powerless!”

Mr Beresford’s colleagues at Good Morning Britain sent the weatherman messages of condolence.

Susanna Reid wrote on Twitter: “Oh Alex. I am so so sorry.”

Piers Morgan added: “Awful. So sorry mate.”

Fellow weather presenter Laura Tobin said: “So sorry-Sending love xxx”.

Mr Beresford made the announcement just an hour after praising NHS volunteers who have been working on the frontline during the coronavirus pandemic.

He added: “A massive thank you to all the NHS volunteers who have signed up to do stirling work..."

Mr Beresford also sent a specific message of thanks to a volunteer who had delivered medication to his step-mum.

“My mum had one of the letters which said she had to stay inside until June,” he said.

“So, as a son I have stepping up, as you would, I have been going to the shops for my mum, I have been collecting her medication on a weekly basis”.

He added: “Today I didn’t have to do that as a lovely lady, I don’t know her name, I wish I did know her name but she delivered my mum’s medication right to her doorstep, with a smile, happy to help.

“My mum also received one of them food parcels, which we were amazed at how much great food was in there, and is really going to keep my mum going [sic]."
