The controversial Kodi media player is now available on Xbox One.

Previously known as XBMC (Xbox Media Centre), it was originally built for users of the original Xbox, although it had no links to Microsoft which created the console.

Its name was changed to Kodi in 2014 and it has since made it to a wide range of platforms, including Android, Windows, macOS and Linux.

Its arrival on the Xbox One is being seen as a homecoming of sorts.

While some users can now install Kodi on an Xbox One games console, Redditors have discovered that it isn’t available everywhere.

It appears to only be available to users in Europe at the time of writing. Xbox One gamers in the US are unable to install.

“Let us end the year 2017 with a blast including a nostalgic reference to the past. It has long been asked for by so many and now it finally happened. Kodi for Xbox One is available worldwide through Windows and Xbox Store,” Kodi wrote in a blog post.

“What you should really understand and keep remembering is that it is still in early stages of development and has very rough edges, might not be as stable as the regular version and may even be missing some functions.”

Kodi is perfectly legal software, but it can be used to illegally stream films, TV shows and sports fixtures with the aid of third-party add ons.

“The official Kodi version does not contain any content what so ever,” the app description reads. “This means that you should provide your own content from a local or remote storage location, DVD, Blu-Ray or any other media carrier that you own.

“Additionally Kodi allows you to install third-party plugins that may provide access to content that is freely available on the official content provider website. Any other means of watching illegal content which would otherwise be paid for is not endorsed or approved by Team Kodi.”

Experts recently warned against the use of so-called “Kodi boxes” that come pre-loaded with piracy focused add ons, claiming them to be poorly made.

However, it is possible to use Kodi completely safely, by installing it on a legitimate media player.
