"Enoteca" literally means a wine library and generally refers to a fairly serious wine shop, which can also serve basic meals. Here the food goes beyond the basic, running from saffron and lemon linguine with crab, to guinea fowl stuffed with ricotta, mint and spinach, and a reliable tiramisu. The wine list is mighty, and a recent revamp means that the place now looks as good as it feels.

Fratelli Sarti 121 Bath Street, Glasgow, tel: 0141 204 0440

It's a deli, a wine shop and two different restaurants with good casalinga (home-style) cooking. This is where Glasgow does la dolce vita, from a heart-starting morning espresso to a quick lunch of maltagliati all'Amatriciana or a full-on feast of zuppa di faro and porcini mushrooms on polenta. The deli side of the business is great, so just stand in the middle and buy your way out the door.

Zucca 188 Westbourne Grove, London W11, tel: 020 7727 0060

All white and minimalist, Zucca may look a bit too hip, but at least its heart is in Italy. Staff are kind, the wood-fired oven is a reassuring sight, and the food can be pretty good if you know what to order. Keep it simple, with a pasta such as linguine with mussels, or risotto with butternut squash and mascarpone, and an admirably thin and crisp-bottomed wood-fired pizza.
