'Vampire facelift' uses your own blood as cell filler

A new facelifting procedure, nicknamed the 'vampire facelift,' injects your own blood back into your face.

The latest product to benefit from the Twilight buzz and general vampire rage, this new method called Selphyl has been causing a buzz lately, due to its 'natural' feel, compared with alternatives relying on synthetic fillers.

A press release explains: "The dermatologist or plastic surgeon collects a small volume of blood from the patient and through a patented process, separates and concentrates the patients own platelets and fibrin into a matrix, [which] can be applied to a treatment area of the face or body to stimulate cell proliferation which promotes the increase of volume and rejuvenation of the skin through a process of targeted tissue re-generation."

Skin depressions, acne scars, wrinkles and folds can all be treated this way in what experts say takes no longer than 20 minutes. Results take three weeks to develop and last for up to 18 months, costing around $1,100.

Patients might experience minor side effects, such as mild irritation, edema, bruising, swelling, or itching, but since Selphyl does not contain any animal or synthetic components, there is "virtually no risk of an allergic reaction and there have been no reported allergic reactions to date."
