On Friday this week, the world will finally see athletes arrive from all around the world into the Russian city of Sochi, as the 22nd Winter Olympics kicks off with its official opening ceremony.

Each country will showcase their athletes with every outfit representing their textile industry and its patriotism.

A few weeks ago, Team USA unveiled its uniform, a proud American knitwear designed by Ralph Lauren. The shawl cardigans are stamped with a Made in America label and emblazoned with Stars & Stripes, just like their flag. The woolen reindeer hat is pretty much impossible to ignore, while it pairs up with a cream turtle neck jumper, white tracksuit trousers and black leather boots.

Germany opted for a colourful skiing outfit designed by Bogner, Adidas and Sioux; Sweden chose their worldwide successful high-street label, H&M, to create a patriotic outfit with their national flag colours (blue and yellow). Italians are known for their high-end fashion and designers, so their in-house Armani made a total navy blue gear, with the national flag reproduced in the hood of the jacket, combined with white tennis. Great Britain kept the tradition of an Adidas uniform carrying the Union Jack colours.

See below a selection of the 10 most remarkable outfits of Sochi 2014.
