Anna Wintour reveals how to dress for a job interview

Knowing what to wear to a job interview, no matter what industry you work in, is an age-old conundrum.

But, if there’s anyone you can rely on for some sound sartorial advice, it’s Anna Wintour.

In the latest episode of “Go Ask Anna”, a weekly segment on Vogue's Youtube channel in which Wintour dishes out advice on anything from the Kardashians to comfort dressing, the US editor-in-chief shares her tips on exactly how to dress for an interview. But her answer might surprise you.

“It’s so interesting to me how people dress when they come in for interviews,” Wintour says, sat behind a desk wearing a patterned blue dress and her trademark sunglasses.

“Sometimes you feel they’re wearing clothes that they just bought that morning, or maybe the night before, and not something that in any way suits their personality and who they are.

“I think what everybody should remember, whether they’re interviewing at Vogue or indeed anywhere, [is] that we’re not hiring your wardrobe; your wardrobe is not going to be doing the job for you. It’s who you are.”

Wintour continues, recalling a time when a young man came to interview at the US fashion and lifestyle magazine wearing a dress and carrying a handbag.

“I gave him the job on the spot”, she says.

“You have to dress for yourself. It’s the same for any job you might be going for, I think it doesn’t do yourself a service to fake it.”

The fashion expert also shares her thoughts on leggings, revealing she thinks they look best in black before forecasting their return to the fashion fold in another 20 years.

However, when reminded that she wore the garment in a shade of pink in the early 1990s, Wintour states: “That was a mistake.”

The illustrious editor also shared her thoughts on the rise in popularity of the Kardashian clan.

“You have to admire how they have created an empire through their personalities and the creative genius of their mother,” she says of the reality star family.

Kim of all of them I feel has possibly changed the most. I personally admire the way that she has become a little bit more minimal in the way that she’s dressing, a little bit more covered."

Wintour goes on to praise Kendall Jenner for “persevering in her highly successful modelling career,” comparing her to legendary 1990s supermodel Linda Evangelista.

“She reminds me in many ways of Linda Evangelista who always was happy being a model,” Wintour says.

“I think that maybe some of the other girls who came up at that time wanted other careers, wanted to be actresses or entrepreneurs, or hosting TV shows or whatever it may be.

“Whereas Linda just loved being a model and as a result she was incredible and a gift to all of us. I see Kendall very much in the same way, it’s just whether with everything else that she’s doing she can keep up the pace."
