Created in 1977, Lindsay Kemp and Christopher Bruce's homage to Lorca for the Rambert Dance company has been given a startling new lease of life for the maestro's centenary. Using every Spanish idiom available to their choreographic palettes, they take us on a tour of the poet's life and art in a way that transcends biography and acquires the symbolic, and sexually ambivalent, resonances of his own writing. Connor O'Brien takes on the role of "The Poet" which was first performed by Bruce - a figure who appears successively as a matador flirting with his bull, a bride in his own Blood Wedding, Buster Keaton in a morally bankrupt America and the suave aesthete who met a brutal end at the hands of Fascist thugs in 1936. Some critics have found Kemp's flamboyant, nay camp, input a tad overpowering but the general consensus has been this is a seductive treat of a revival, confirming Cruel Garden as a modern classic.
