June 21-27 global agenda: Glastonbury festival

The coming week's highlights include the opening of the Wimbledon tennis open in Greater London and the Glastonbury festival in Pilton, England, while a major Turner exhibition travels to Madrid and jazz enthusiasts head to Canada, for the biggest international jazz festival in the world, among other events.

The Championship - Wimbledon

Though the ballot for public tickets closed in December 2009, and the majority of tickets are therefore already allocated, the All England Lawn Tennis Club state that around 6,000 ground passes are available per day, and 500 for the Centre, No.1 and No.2 courts. Those who manage to snag a ground pass but not a seat gather on Aorangi Terrace, known as 'Henman Hill', to watch on a huge television screen placed adjacent to No. 1 Court and join the cheers and celebrations from there.

"Turner and the Masters"

Turner and the Masters presents a selection of paintings by JMW Turner (1775-1851) alongside related works by the old masters and contemporaries. Previously seen in London and Paris (with over 450.000 visitors in the French capital) this exhibition brings together around one hundred works of historical significance from collections around the world. It is the first exhibition to look at Turner's work in the company of the greatest painters in the preceding history of western art such as Poussin, Rembrandt, Rubens.

40th Glastonbury Festival

The Glastonbury Festival is one of the biggest and best-loved music festivals in the world, known for its all-star lineups and varied arts offerings. U2 is being replaced at the last minute by Gorillaz for the 2010 event, which marks the festival's 40th anniversary; other headliners include Muse and Stevie Wonder, to be joined by The Flaming Lips, Pet Shop Boys, Orbital, Vampire Weekend, and several hundred additional acts. Tickets for the 2010 festival are sold out.

OFFF International Festival for the Post Digital Creation Culture

For its 10th anniversary the OFFF festival is once again departing from its hometown of Barcelona and relocating to Paris. The festival - which has previously ventured to venues like New York, Lisbon and Oeiras - will focus on the theme of "Nostalgia For A Past Future" in 2010. The festival's eventful three-day calendar includes a design conference, a multimedia trade fair, a digital animation program, performances, talks, workshops for artists, and most of all aims to celebrate all kinds of visual culture.

Montreal International Jazz Festival

The 31st edition of the world's largest jazz festival, "Jazz Fest," is expected to attract two million attendees at venues across the Quebec capital. Performers range from saxophonist Sonny Rollins to contemporary player David Sanborn. David Reinhardt will play the work of his grandfather Django and George Benson pays tribute to classic Nat King Cole. Other performers include Laurie Anderson, Lou Reed, New Orleans' Allen Toussaint, the Gipsy Kings, and bluesman Taj Mahal, as well as Norway's Tord Gustavsen Trio, Brazil's guitarist Yamandu Costa, France's Sylvain Luc, Italy's trumpeter Paolo Fresu, and Cuban pianist Omar Sosa.

Al Maktoum International Airport Opens
