Andrew Lloyd Webber announces online musical series

The cast of musical series Smash are set to reunite for a livestream of Bombshell in Concert.

The stars of NBC’s short-lived TV show will bring the series’ fictional Marilyn Monroe musical “Bombshell” to life for a virtual event raising money for a coronavirus relief fund.

Introduced by Oscar-winning actor Renee Zellweger, the event will feature the first ever screening of Bombshell in Concert, a one-off Broadway experience recorded back in 2015.

The cast will hold a virtual reunion during the interval, with Katharine McPhee, Debra Messing, Jack Davenport, Christian Borle and Leslie Odom Jr. among the actors coming together over video call.

Streaming at 1am on Thursday 21 May UK time (8pm, Wednesday 20 May Eastern Time) on the People magazine website, the event will benefit The Actors Fund, which has been helping artists in need during the coronavirus pandemic.

Running for two seasons from 2012 to 2013, Smash focussed on the team behind a fictional Broadway musical about the life of Marilyn Monroe and the rivalry between the show’s star Ivy (Megan Hilty) and ensemble member Karen (McPhee).

The series was produced by Steven Spielberg and featured other talent such as Spring Awakening director Michael Mayer and Hairspray songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.
