Former Doctor Who actress Karen Gillan is to star in a new ABC pilot based on a modern reinterpretation of My Fair Lady.

Gillan, who also stars in Marvel’s forthcoming Guardians of the Galaxy, will appear in a pilot for Selfie, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The comedy, which stars Gillan as 20-something Eliza Dooley, sees her become obsessed with her perception on social media.

After suffering a public and humiliating breakup, she becomes the subject of a viral video and has more social media followers than she ever imagined- but for all the wrong reasons.

The viral video leads to her enlisting the help of a marketing expert to help repair the damage to her online public image.

Suburgatory creator Emily Kapnek has written the script for the single-camera half hour comedy, with Julie Anne Robinson due to direct the pilot.

The Scottish actress will return to television after starring in Doctor Who as the Doctor’s companion Amy Pond for more than 30 episodes between 2008-2013.

In 2013, she starred in horror film Oculus and US TV series NTSF:SD:SUV.
