For his first Netflix series, Master of None, Aziz Ansari has cast his real-life parents, Shoukath and Fatima Ansari as protagonist Dev’s.

It shows, and they’re obviously not the greatest actors, but they come across kind of charming because of it.

Neither of Aziz’s parents were desperate to act however, their agreement to co-star was for quite a touching reason.

"Tonight after we did Colbert together,” Ansari wrote on Instagram, “he [Shoukath] said: ‘This is all fun and I liked acting in the show, but I really just did it so I could spend more time with you.’

“I almost instantly collapsed into tears at the thought of how much this person cares about me and took care of me and gave me everything to give me the amazing life I have.”

Not recognising all your parents have done for you, particularly for second generation immigrants, is a theme that is key in the show, particularly in its second episode.

“I’ve been overwhelmed by the response to the Parents episode of our show,” Aziz added. “What’s strange is doing that episode and working with my parents has increased the quality of my relationship to my parents IN MY REAL LIFE.

“In reality, I haven’t always had the best, most open relationship with my parents because we are weirdly closed off emotionally sometimes. But we are getting better.”

The entirety of season one of Master of None is on Netflix now.
