UPDATE: Schumer has since provided elaboration on her further statements insisting that "Inside Amy Schumer is not over. Comedy Central has provided us with a wonderful home and we couldn't be happier there. I am just touring doing standup and focusing on writing for the next year at least. We are slated for a Season 5 but not in the foreseeable future."

In an unexpected turn of events, comedian Amy Schumer appears to have quit her popular US series Inside Amy Schumer.

The sketch series, which began on Comedy Central in 2013 and finished its fourth season in June, was renowned for featuring an array of celebrity guest stars ranging from Tina Fey, Julianne Moore to F. Murray Abraham and Steve Buscemi.

Schumer hinted at the show's demise in a reponse to the controversial comments made by staff writer Kurt Metzger about sexual assault.

The writer, who Schumer classes as a "friend," posted a series of Facebook posts earlier this week following the Upright Citizens Brigade's alleged banishment of comedian Aaron Glasser who, Variety reports, was accused of sexual assault in a private Facebook group for female comedians.

On Monday (15 August), Metzger wrote: “Don’t f*cking complain about the police not helping if you didn’t bother going to the police at all. Why aren’t the rape kits being tested??’ Because instead of actually educating women with useful information on what to do if they are being victimized, you blather nonsense about ‘culture’ and then tell them being weak is being strong.”

Schumer initially expressed her 'disappointment' with Metzger's comments via Twitter and now, just days later, has posted a further message following the social media frenzy the remarks incited.

Should the news be confirmed, it will come as a shock to fans considering the series was renrewed for a fifth season in January 2016.

Metzger is credited as writer on seven episodes of the comedy series and recently starred in Louis CK series Horace and Pete.
