The Week in Review: The Opera The Carmelites
Phyllida Lloyd directs Poulenc's opera set amid the turmoil of the French Revolution. Based on a play by Georges Bernanos, it focuses on the experiences of a group of Carmelite nuns as they face certain death.
"The real strength of Lloyd's production - and I doubt you'll see it better done - is the way in which she has revitalised its dramatic imperative. She really uses the music," pronounced Edward Seckerson. "It is directed with a simplicity and power that silences all the camp, Sound Of Music sniggers that nuns on stage usually provoke... A triumph," gushed The Daily Telegraph. "Lloyd's superb staging is the model of simplicity, the scenes fitting together seamlessly in Anthony Ward's minimalist set," cried the Daily Mail. "One of the most shattering theatrical experiences on offer in London," announced The Times.
Backed by magnificent performances, Lloyd's simple staging allows the music to carry the drama of Poulenc's opera.
The Carmelites is at the Coliseum until 10 June. For bookings and enquiries call 0171-632 8300.
