The Week in Review: The Opera The Carmelites

Phyllida Lloyd directs Poulenc's opera set amid the turmoil of the French Revolution. Based on a play by Georges Bernanos, it focuses on the experiences of a group of Carmelite nuns as they face certain death.

Backed by magnificent performances, Lloyd's simple staging allows the music to carry the drama of Poulenc's opera.
