THE FIVE BEST PLAYS

Grand Hotel (Dominion, 071-580 9562). Superbly crafted show with the best dancing in town.

The Winter's Tale (Royal Shakespeare, Stratford-upon-Avon, 0789- 295623). John Nettles stars in Adrian Noble's irresistibly festive production.

Schippel the Plumber (Greenwich, 081-858 7755). Jeremy Sams's splendid revival of this Carl Sternheim-C P Taylor satire.

The Rise and Fall of Little Voice (Cottesloe, 071-928 2255). Alison Steadman stars in Jim Cartwright's heartbreakingly uproarious account of man-catching in darkest Bolton.

Six Degrees of Separation (Royal Court, 071-730 1745). Accomplished moral comedy by John Guare, with riveting performances by Stockard Channing and Adrian Lester.
