NO ONE does shimmering light like Monet; and no light shimmers like that of Venice. The combination of the two is almost too much. Venice has defeated most attempts to capture it, whether on film, in words, or on canvas. Judge for yourself if Monet got it right - above, Saint-Georges Majeur (1908), the classic view of San Giorgio from San Marco - at the National Museum of Wales's Impressions of Venice from Turner to Monet. Amgueddfa'r Gogledd, Llanberis (0286-870636), Sat to 20 Sept; National Museum of Wales, Cardiff (0222-397951), 3 Oct to 15 Nov.
