THE FIVE BEST FILMS

Belle de Jour (18; MGM Swiss Centre, Everyman until Weds). A welcome new release for Luis Bunuel's cool 1967 study of sexual fantasy. See review, main paper.

The Player (15; Odeon Leicester Sq & Kensington, Whiteleys, Screen on the Hill, MGM Chelsea). Tim Robbins excels in a brilliant bite at modern Hollywood from Robert Altman.

Casablanca (U; Plaza). Fifty years old and playing again where it belongs, up on the big screen.

Van Gogh (12; Renoir). Jacques Dutronc as the doomed painter, coolly directed by Maurice Pialat.

No End (18; Rio Cinema 071-254 6677, today only). A rare chance to see this 1984 Krzysztof Kieslowski drama, in which the hero is unfortunately dead. Gloomy but compelling.
