How great it is to discover belatedly the Brazilian legend Maia, a teenage illegal immigrant to the US who took Sly Stone and the Isleys' 1970s funk back home to Rio, blending it with samba, Afrobeat and even reggae.

Clavinets choogle, guitars freak out, and Maia – who died in 1998 – sings and raps over the top like a stoned genius. This is a landmark release, part of David Byrne's "World Psychedelic Classics" series that included Shuggie Otis. Buy it.
