Album review: The Fall, Re-Mit (Cherry Red)

Fall albums are notoriously variable in quality, and usually dependent on whether the more propulsive grooves are compelling enough to get one over the marsh-like longueurs of noise and abstract verbiage.

Sadly, here they're not: the lurching blues-boogie "Kinder of Spine" resembles "The W.A.S.P." by The Doors, with Mark E Smith as an even more inebriate Jim Morrison, while "Sir William Wray" features his usual bawled incoherencies battling for ear-space with an organ motif. There's even a track called just "Noise", with sundry loops cycling behind Smith's admonishment of his guitarist, "nasty-noise Peter". "Irish" and "Jetplane" bring a late flicker of focus to the proceedings, but the band's resolute primitivism works to their detriment.
