The first shock about this comeback album from that most Futurist of bands is that it begins with the sound of a dirty great guitar, quickly followed by the sweary couplet “There’s no heaven, there’s no hell/ Cream will float, but shit will sell”.

The second, which endures a lot longer, is that History of Modern isway better than it has any right to be, with Paul Humphreys producing plenty of massive, euphoric synth melodies for Andy McCluskey to dad-dance to with abandon.
