MGMT are, along with Vampire Weekend, the most droppable name out of New York City right now, and have been heralded with the loudest buzz of advance hyperbole of any NYC band since the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, if not the Strokes.

And – it's always annoying when this happens – it's richly deserved. The core duo of Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden make a complex but always catchy psych-pop sound that's forever higher than the clouds, reaching for the sun and never ever earthbound.

You may have heard the Grandaddy-meets-Flowered Up single "Time to Pretend", with its sugar-rush keyboards and vaguely zen refrain "Everything must run its course". (MGMT have a habit of sounding as though they're imparting eternal cosmic truths even if, upon closer examination, they probably aren't.)

'Oracular Spectacular' has a broadly similar flavour, reminiscent, in recent terms, of Flaming Lips, Super Furry Animals and Mercury Rev, or in less recent terms, of Seventies white soul ("Electric Feel" could be a lost track by the Bee Gees, Doobie Brothers or Hall & Oates) or aviator-shaded AOR. ("Of Moons, Birds and Monsters" sounds like Fleetwood Mac at their most spooked.) These songs will haunt you.
