Album: Delaney Davidson, Self Decapitation (Voodoo Rhythm)
Davidson is a one-man band from New Zealand who builds dark cranky blues numbers from looping and layering guitar riffs into walls of reverb-enriched sound.
These spirited if occasionally world-weary songs evoke the likes of Cash, Waits, Dylan and even Lou Reed but are never merely the work of a copyist. This constantly surprising album was previously only available at the man's gigs and website, so it's great to see it finally get a proper release in the UK.
