Kylie Minogue is expected to make a "complete recovery" after her breast cancer surgery was hailed as a success by the doctor who carried out the procedure.

The 36-year-old chart star, now recovering from the operation in her home city of Melbourne, was said to be in "high spirits".

Minogue had a cancerous lump removed at the city's St Frances Xavier Cabrini Hospital at around 5pm on Friday. She announced she had been diagnosed with cancer on Tuesday, prompting a wave of sympathy around the world. Later tests showed the disease had been caught at an early stage and had not spread to the rest of her body.

Her surgeon Dr Jenny Senior said: "I am very pleased to be able to confirm that the operation was successful. I feel confident that we caught the cancer in time and that she is now on the road to complete recovery."

Minogue, whose chart-topping hits include "Can't get you out of my head" and "Spinning around", was being comforted by her French actor boyfriend Olivier Martinez. Her parents, Ron and Carol, were also at her side, along with her sister Dannii and brother Brenden.
