Ed Sheeran's X has hit number one to become the fastest-selling album of 2014 so far.

The British singer-songwriter sold 182,000 copies of his second album in its first week of release, beating Coldplay's previous record with Ghost Stories of 168,000.

Sheeran's chart success with X (pronounced as 'multiply') follows his praised set at Glastonbury Festival this weekend.

Sam Smith's In the Lonely Hour is at second place in the Official UK Albums Chart while Lana Del Rey's Ultraviolence fell from the top spot to sit in third.

The "Blue Jeans" singer failed to liven up the Worthy Farm crowd on Saturday and was criticised for her "lacklustre" stage presence.

Meanwhile in the singles chart, Oliver Heldens and Becky Hill reached the summit with "Gecko (Overdrive)" to knock Ella Henderson’s debut "Ghost" into second place.

Songs played on streaming services such as Spotify and Deezer will be counted from today but the first chart to incorporate these records will not be released until next Sunday, the Official Charts Company has confirmed.
