Legendary opera singer Placido Domingo has been hospitalised in Mexico after being diagnosed with coronavirus.

In a statement given to US news network CNN, a spokesperson for Domingo announced that he was “doing well and responding to treatment”.

The singer revealed the positive diagnosis last week in a Facebook post, in which he reminded fans of the importance of hand-washing and following official guidelines.

But since then, complications ensued and Domingo was checked into a hospital in Acapulco.

The Three Tenors singer had recently been accused by several women of sexual misconduct, leading to several of his performances being cancelled and an apology from him.

Domingo is one of several celebrities to have contracted the virus. Others include actors Tom Hanks, Idris Elba and Olga Kurylenko, singer-songwriter John Prine and basketball star Kevin Durant.

The deadly virus has now claimed the lives of thousands worldwide, including actor Mark Blum.
