World music of the week: The London International Festival of Exploratory Music, Kings Place, London N1

Riding high: Frida Hyvöne opens the festival on Wednesday

The world of "exploratory music", a term coined by Miguel Santos in 2000, has encompassed the outer reaches and inner recesses of music from Portugal, Brazil, Serbia, and elsewhere, and this year, the Kings Place festival focuses on Scandinavia, with Sounds of the Cool featuring bands ranging from indie-pop and avant-rock to yoik folk, nu-jazz and ambient electronica.

The piano-led electro-pop confessionals of Frida Hyvöne open the festival on Wednesday, with post-rock five-piece EF on Thursday, and Norway's drone-heavy Deaf Centre conjuring electronica on Friday.

Also on Friday, Wimme Saari's shamanistic chant finds itself embedded in new technology, and he's joined by Finnish composer and clarinet and saxophone player Tapani Rinne's minimal jazz and electronica sound pieces.

To close is Biosphere, from Tromso in the Arctic Circle, who draws on dance, techno, and Eno-style experimentalism for a chilled ambience.
