5-7 Blandford St, London W1 (0171-486 9696)

71 St John St, Smithfield, London EC1 (0171-490 1750)

12 Upper St, St Martin's Lane, London WC2 (0171-379 7811)

The three restaurants differ in style, but they all serve generous portions of vegetarian dishes.

The Conservatory

The Lanesborough, 1 Lanesborough Pl, London SW1 (0171-259 5599)

A three-course set menu here is pounds 29.50. Chef Paul Gayler was the pioneer of vegetarian haute cuisine, producing seven-course gourmet vegetarian dinners. They are not on offer at The Conservatory, which has a good selection of veggie dishes nevertheless.

Demuth's

2 North Parade Passage, off Abbey Green, Bath (0122-544 6059)

This licensed city-centre restaurant in a Grade II-listed building offers "innovative vegetarian cuisine". It's open for breakfast, tea, lunch and dinner, seven days a week.

VEG

8 Egerton Garden Mews, London SW3 (0171-584 7007) This quirky restaurant, featuring a hybrid of Buddhist and spicy Chinese vegetarian food, is popular with Knightsbridge residents who can't resist its all-you-can-eat hot buffet lunch for pounds 4.99. The late Linda McCartney was apparently a regular customer. Imitation meat dishes - including `duck' made from layers of marinated tofu and vegetarian `chicken' drumsticks - are a big hit.

Terre a Terre

71 East Street, Brighton (01273 729051)

See Where Shall We Meet? (opposite).

Cranks Vitality and Health Cafes

London branches at Adelaide St, Canary Wharf, Marshall St, St Christopher's Place, Great Newport St (re-opens Sept) and Tottenham St, W1

The old Birkenstock-wearers hangout has had an injection of ginger detoxicants. The emphasis now is on low-fat healthy eating.
