White

1998 Vina Casas del Bosque Sauvignon Blanc, pounds 4.99, Asda

Reduced from pounds 6.99, this is a high-quality sauvignon blanc, made by David Morrison, with a host of tropical fruit-salad flavours and a crisp, nettley zestiness derived from the cool Casablanca Valley vineyards in Chile where the wine was made. A short period in oak casks has nicely rounded out the sharper edges.

Red

1997 The Barossa Shiraz, pounds 6.99, Sainsbury's selected stores

From Peter Lehmann, the self-styled "Bear of the Barossa", this is a suitably knee-capping Australian red made from the shiraz grape, with nearly 15 per cent alcohol underlying the strong, sweet berry fruit flavours tinged with mint humbug and coconut oak. Subtle it ain't.
