New York, I Love You (15)

"I happen to like New York, I happen to love this town", goes the 1930 Cole Porter song, and this portmanteau film is the latest to raise a hymn to the place.

Film-makers as diverse as Brett Ratner, Mira Nair, Fatih Akin and Shekhar Khapur have whipped up fleeting vignettes of romantic, sometimes erotic, connection, set against mostly Manhattan locations – Tribeca, Upper West Side, Central Park, SoHo, Chinatown. Some are sweet – Nair's dreamy evocation of a Hasidic bride (Natalie Portman) negotiating with an Indian diamond dealer (Irrfan Khan) is the pick of them – some playful, some passionate, though none leap off the screen declaring themselves unmissable. The style is improvisatory more than considered, and the vague scripting fails to establish a coherent theme or pattern.
