Love + Hate (15)

Love + Hate is the 173rd film I've seen about an Asian-British/white relationship, but this one has a gritty naturalism which sets it apart. Partly improvised by its unknown cast, Love + Hate has a northern setting of graffiti-smeared wastegrounds, car-park liaisons and casual racism. It's not as depressing as that sounds, though. There's a winningly sincere central romance, and optimism in the easy friendship between the story's two heroines, Samina Awan and the especially convincing Nichola Burley.
