The height of awards season arrived with the announcement of the 2017 Oscar nominations - a day when Hollywood's elite learned which of their films will be in contention to take home those all-important gold trophies later this month.

Below are all the details you need about the 89th Academy Awards ranging from where you can watch the nominations, which films will be facing off and when exactly the big day itself is.

When are the nominations announced?

This year's nominations were announced on 24 January In a change from the usual format, the contenders were revealed via a live stream as opposed to in front of a very sleepy audience of journalists, press agents and producers. Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs will present proceedings alongside Oscar winners Brie Larson (Room), Jennifer Hudson (Dreamgirls) and Emmanuel Lubezki (Birdman, The Revenant) as well as past nominees Jason Reitman (Juno) and Ken Watanabe (The Last Samurai).

Who are the nominees?

We're a matter of hours away from finding out, so be sure to check back here for a full list, however going by recent ceremonies, it's a sure bet this year will be a case of La La Land - Damien Chazelle's love letter to musicals of yesteryear - vs Moonlight - the affecting tale of self-discovery from Barry Jenkins.

Expect Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea), Natalie Portman (Jackie), Dev Patel (Lion) and Viola Davis (Fences) to be just four of the names mentioned across the four acting categories while directing wise, Chazelle and Jenkins will face stiff competition from Kenneth Lonergan (Manchester) and - if there's any justice - Denis Villeneuve (Arrival).

Miscellaneous films likely to receive recognition in the main categories include Mel Gibson's war biopic Hacksaw Ridge, biographical drama Hidden Figures, Golden Globe-winning French film Elle and Tom Ford's divisive Nocturnal Animals while animated films Kubo and the Two Strings and Zootropolis and foreign language pictures Toni Erdmann and The Salesman will no doubt be named in their designated categories.

When is the ceremony?

The 89th Academy Awards will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on 8pm EST, Sunday 26 February (that's about 1am UK time so be sure to get the espresso martini ingredients in).

Who is hosting?

US chat show host Jimmy Kimmel will be hosting for the first time following on from Chris Rock who did a stellar job last year amid the #OscarsSoWhite controversy.

Who is presenting?

Currently, only four presenters have been announced - and they all have something in common: they won awards last year. Brie Larson (Room), Leonardo DiCaprio (The Revenant), Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl) and Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies) will all return to the stage to hand trophies over to their respective successors.
