Avatar sneak peek unveils behind-the-scenes look at new sequels
Four sequels are currently in the works
Film producer Jon Landau has shared a sneak peek from the set of one of the Avatar sequels, teasing what’s to come when the franchise returns in 2022.
Avatar 2 is currently scheduled for release in December of that year, meaning it will debut 13 years after James Cameron’s 2009 original.
Four more sequels are planned. Avatar 3 is scheduled for release in 2024, Avatar 4 in 2026, and Avatar 5 in 2028.
Landau recently shared a photo of motion capture work being done for the sequels. He didn’t specify which instalment he was working on, but Landau is listed as a producer alongside Cameron on Avatar 2.
“On the Avatar sequels, we use performance capture for things that are both big and small!” Landau wrote next to two images.
One shows three horses and riders covered in motion-capture dots, and the other features a young child also wearing a motion-capture outfit.
In March this year, Avatar regained its spot as the highest-grossing film of all time, after being overtaken by Avengers: Endgame in 2019.
Avatar’s re-release in China enabled it to climb back to the top. The film currently has a lifetime gross of $2.8.4bn according to Box Office Mojo, compared to $2.79bn for Avengers: Endgame.
