COMING ATTRACTIONS

4 September: Whit Stillman, the very dry, very funny American writer-director of Barcelona, returns with arguably his wittiest work, The Last Days of Disco. Chloe Sevigny and Kate Beckinsale play the rising socialites whose life in "the very, very early 1980s" revolves entirely around nightclubbing. As much an arch dissection of hedonism as a celebration of it, so it ain't no Boogie Nights.

Also: Denzel Washington in Spike Lee's basketball movie He Got Game; Rachel Weisz and Anna Friel in The Land Girls; and Species II, the sequel no one has been waiting for.

11 September: the gory opening half-hour of Steven Spielberg's WWII drama Saving Private Ryan is rumoured to really sort the men from the boys. What follows is the story of Captain Miller (Tom Hanks), dispatched behind enemy lines to rescue Private Ryan (Matt Damon). Will he make it? More pertinently, will you?

Also: Babymother, a British reggae musical; and Character, the (Dutch) winner of this year's Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

In October: Jim Carrey (right) finds his entire life is being televised in The Truman Show; and Michael Haneke's controversial anti-violence thriller Funny Games is belatedly released.
