Jadon Sancho: Borussia Dortmund winger left out after late return from England duty

The 19-year-old has reportedly been punished by head coach Lucien Favre

Jadon Sancho has reportedly been dropped from Borussia Dortmund‘s squad for their Bundesliga clash against league leaders Borussia Monchengladbach after “returning late” from international duty with England, according to German publication Kicker.

The 19-year-old started in England’s victory over Czech Republic, but was dropped from the first-eleven for the following Euro 2020 qualifier against Bulgaria.

Manager Lucien Favre hinted at potential unrest in his pre-match press conference when he claimed Sancho “still has a lot to learn”.

“The expectations of Jadon are enormous, but that is dangerous,” he said. “Jadon is a great player, no discussions, but he still has a lot to learn.”

Sancho was also left out of Dortmund’s draw against Freiburg prior to the international break with Favre saying the winger “was dead and needed a break”.

It’s not the first time Sancho has been punished by the club, after being dropped to the U23s in the 2017/18 season by former manager Peter Stoger after reportedly arriving late to training on more than one occasion.

Speculation over the former Manchester City player’s future has persisted after Dortmund’s assistant manager Jorg Heinrich admitted the Englishman is likely to leave within the next two seasons.

“Jadon can become one of the best players in Europe, or even the world,” Heinrich told Goal.

“It won’t be easy to keep him at Dortmund. We hope he plays one or two seasons longer but we all know very, very big clubs with a lot of money want to have him in their team.

“He should know Dortmund is an excellent place for young players to play consistently and to develop on a very, very high level.”
