The Duke and Duchess of Sussex wished the Queen a happy birthday on Tuesday via a video call on which their 11-month-old son, Archie, was also present.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are currently residing in Los Angeles, having officially quit their roles in the royal family last month.

Due to the time difference of eight hours, the couple spoke to the Queen in the afternoon.

It is thought that the phone call took place via Zoom after aides helped the Monarch to download the app on her iPad.

While the Queen officially celebrates her birthday in June with the annual Trooping the Colour event, her actual date of birth is 21 April.

To mark the occasion, the royal family’s Twitter account shared private footage of the Queen playing with a pram as a toddler and as a young girl on a seesaw.

The archive film, which is from the Royal Collection Trust, showed a young Princess Elizabeth jumping around a garden with her younger sister, Princess Margaret.

The phone call between the Queen and the Sussexes came one day after Harry and Meghan announced they would no longer be co-operating with four UK publications.

On Monday, a representative for the couple wrote a letter to editors of The Daily Mail, Daily Mirror, Daily Express and The Sun in which they accused the four publications of writing “distorted, false or invasive” stories about them.

However, the couple have since been accused of censoring parts of the British media for their decision, with Ian Murray, executive director of the Society of Editors, claiming that Meghan and Harry are trying to “undermine” the press.
