Chrissy Teigen has spoken of the “embarrassment” she felt while suffering from postnatal depression following the birth of her daughter Luna.

The model and Lip Sync Battle host described how she also felt ashamed because she had so much help.

John (Legend) was great and helpful. My mom was here... I was embarrassed,” she admitted.

In a new interview with Porter she also admitted to being prescribed Lexapro for depression when she was a teenager, saying that she didn’t take the condition seriously at the time.

“I thought everyone had problems like mine, like it was part of life,” she said.

Years later, as a new mother, her symptoms returned. Teigen suffered a loss of appetite, unexplained aches and pains and even lacked the energy to walk to her own bedroom, resulting in her sleeping on the sofa.

Teigen credited medication and a good work/life balance for helping her get back on her feet, saying: “I’m obviously medicated.”

As the bestselling author of two cookbooks, she says cooking is one of her favourite ways to relax.

While Teigen has become famous for her presence on social media, she acknowledged that it still hurts when she reads negative comments about herself.

“It's funny when everyone thinks you're so tough and things just roll off your back and you don't care. It's good to care,” she said.

“I think you should want to be a respected, liked person. And it sucks when people don't like you.”

Teigen has also received praise for her comments about her fluctuating weight following the birth of her two children.

On Twitter last month, Teigen wrote, ““how do you eat like this??” - basically I am 20 pounds heavier than I was before miles. he's 10 months old, I never lost the last bit because I just love food too much. Just coming to terms with my new normal, when I had this certain number for so long!

"the thinnest I've ever been was right after Luna. Postpartum depression. I'LL TAKE THESE POUNDS AND THIS FEELING!"
