Samsung releases video showing Galaxy Fold device being tested for creases when phone closes

Samsung claims to have fixed one of the biggest concerns surrounding its new Galaxy Fold device.

Part smartphone, part tablet, the Galaxy Fold is part of a new generation of foldable phones coming out in 2019, though secrecy still shrouding the handset has led to speculation that the device still has some issues.

A recently leaked video appeared to show a visible crease down the centre of the main screen, which was said to appear after around 10,000 folds of the phone.

Samsung countered this with a video of its own, showing extensive folding tests to prove the durability of the Galaxy Fold.

"Samsung subjected the device to several rounds of extensive tests in its state-of-the-art reliability labs to make sure that the Galaxy Fold is ready to come to market," the South Korean electronics giant wrote in a blog post.

"Naturally, given the smartphone's design, a folding test was a pivotal part of the Galaxy Fold's durability assessment."

The week-long tests examined whether the Galaxy Fold could outlast 200,000 folds and unfolds – the equivalent of 100 folds per day for around five years.

"While the extent of the test may seem like overkill to some, Samsung viewed it as vital to ensuring the durability of device's hinged design and Infinity Flex Display," Samsung said.

Despite the handset being first unveiled four months ago, Samsung remains guarded about its new handset and is yet to allow journalists to report on any hands-on time with the device.

There is less than one month before Samsung will open pre-orders for the Galaxy Fold, which commence on 26 April in the UK.

The full release date will follow on 3 May, allowing people to purchase the smartphone for £1,800 through the Samsung website.
