Talented mum transforms husband’s old shirts into dresses for her daughters

For mum-of-four Stephanie Miller sewing has become a part of life

If your wardrobe has taken on a life of its own, it might be time for a clear-out but once you’ve successfully weeded out the unwanted, what do you do with that big bag of castoffs?

Well, one mother-of-four has shown off her thrifty ability to transform her husband’s hand-me-downs into beautiful dresses for her children.

Stephanie Miller, 27, from Utah, US, runs the Instagram account 'mothermakesx4' where she showcases the clothes she makes for her daughters.

But, instead of stocking up at the fabric store, she makes every single outfit from her husband’s old shirts.

A hobby that began just two years ago, Miller made her first dress after her husband was clearing out his closet and almost threw away a shirt that shrunk.

Instead, she sought inspiration from Instagram starts Liz Bryson and Sarah Tyau, and gave it a new lease of life.

Now, she documents her creations with adorable before and after photos of her two young daughter’s sporting their dad’s oversized shirts alongside images of the finished pieces.

From gingham puff-sleeve mini dresses to candy stripe pinafores and plaid playsuits, the resourceful mum uses everything from dye and decorative frills to transform the clothes.

Aside from giving her girls an ever-growing wardrobe, Miller says that taking up sewing has transformed her life and even helped her overcome postpartum depression.

“I still have an intense desire to make things and want to feel more fulfilled in more ways than just being a mum,” she told Babble.

“I also believe it is important for kids to see their parents be passionate and follow their dreams.”
