In case you somehow missed the onslaught of reminders littering the high street, Mother’s Day is fast approaching – it’s on Sunday 11 March, if you were wondering – and, while we’re sure the woman in your life would appreciate flowers and a home-cooked meal, why not buy her something she really wants. Whether it’s your mum, grandma, step-mother or mother-in-law, it’s time to celebrate all the women you know and love, and the trick here is to treat her to something she would never normally buy for herself.

Aerin Beauty, Hibiscus Palm EDP, £140, Net-a-Porter

You’ll be hard pushed to find a woman who doesn’t love unboxing a new fragrance, and this new addition from Aerin Beauty is a spring-worthy scent that suits all. While you might not be able to afford to take your mum on holiday, gifting her Hibiscus Palm comes a close second with whiffs that evoke the smell of a sun-drenched tropical island, coconuts and cocktails by the sea. Wrapped in floral notes of palm leaf and hibiscus mixed with accords of frangipani, vanilla and musk, you simply can’t go wrong. Even better, it comes in a beautifully printed presentation box.

Rhombus Embossed Bag, £35.99, Mango

A trusty handbag might seem like a boring present, but for trendy mums on-the-go it’s anything but. As style-savvy shoppers will know, simplicity is key when it comes to a bag that will stand the test of time, and this one from Mango ticks all the boxes. The perfect size to hold all her daily essentials, it can be held using the top handle or worn as a crossbody using the detachable strap. We also love the ecru colour, which means it will go with everything in her wardrobe all year round.

Happy Mother’s Day Gift Set, £43.95, Lush

For a mum who deserves a real pamper session we suggest picking up pretty much anything from Lush’s Mother’s Day range, but if you can’t choose then this gift set is a failsafe option. Filled with a selection of eight bath and body treats it includes the Madame President bath bomb, Mother of Pearl marbled bubbleroon, Charity Pot hand and body lotion, Purple Loosestrife soap, Mum Look What I Made You bath bomb, Ceridwen’s Cauldron bath oil, Antiope naked shower gel and The Comforter bubble bar.

Rosie For Autograph, Satin Floral Print Long Sleeve Pyjamas, £35, Marks & Spencer

If your mum is a real homebody then gift her the ultimate in lavish lounging – some silky PJs. A set that will bring a touch of luxury to her downtime, this pair from Rosie for Autograph will really help her relax after a long day. Not only does the floral print satin fabric give them a feminine and slinky look but it also feels super-indulgent on the skin. Inspired by classic 1920s nightwear, they are designed with a long sleeved shirt and matching bottoms that fit like a dream and mean she’ll enjoy a blissful slumber.

Malin + Goetz, Leather Candle, £40, Space NK

Scented candles may not be the most original of gifts, but you can’t go wrong with one that promises to fill her home with her favourite smell. Plus they last a whole lot longer than a fresh spring bouquet. While there are plenty of light and airy options on the market, we think this leather scented candle will prove a winning investment for the woman who prefers something a little different. Handmade and hand-poured in Brooklyn, New York, it provides a warm, creamy scent with a masculine edge that promises to become a true signature whiff for any room in the home.

Colour-Block Cardigan With Mohair Pockets, £69, Cos

Don’t be put off by the connotations that come with wearing a cardigan because, thanks to the fashion world, they’re on the cusp of a serious comeback. Worn by the likes of Cara Delevingne and Kendall Jenner, the look has been resurrected from sartorial Siberia to become the ultimate fashion statement that’s both stylish and super-practical. For a playful twist on the classic piece, we like this wool-blend option from Cos that’s designed with a straight fit, and colour block design in navy, black, pink and grey.

Ugg Slide, £90, Ugg

The same goes for this pair of Ugg slippers. A style referred to as ugly and inelegant, the old-school booties have been deemed cool once again by the ever-so-stylish Alexa Chung, and who are we to argue? If the idea of going all out with a pair of boots sounds a little too outré for you mum, we suggest opting for these slides instead. Designed with an open toe and slip-on fit, they feature soft summer-weight sheepskin and a lightweight indoor-outdoor sole. Also available in black or aqua blue.
