Winding down for a restful night’s sleep needn’t be a ploddingly monotonous nightly chore. Great design can elevate the everyday, from your nine to five, to your five to nine. So why not make the most of these precious evening hours with the help of some of the leading design brands launching sleep-savvy products.

First things first, there are two major players in the design market that are helping to optimise sleep quality once you’re actually in bed. At 75 years of age, you will have spent five years dreaming, and even more than that, sleeping. Your lifetime sleep average clocks in at around 25 years, according to Rick Hussein, one of Harley Street’s leading osteopaths working in the sleep design market with new innovator, Kally Sleep.

Kally Sleep, founded in 2018, is pioneering the importance of the relationship between product design and scientific expertise. The Kally Pillow, a long, curved sleep accessory, has been collaboratively designed with Harley Street doctors and osteopaths to change the way we engage with our bedding.

Director, Ori Leslau, says that the Kally Pillow was developed to “encourage people to adopt the healthiest sleep posture – a relaxed foetal position on your side, keeping the head, neck and spine aligned throughout the night to prevent injury and discomfort come morning”.

The second brand working to improve sleep quality is Sheridan Australia, which has launched a range of sheeting that helps regulate your temperature while you sleep. The Super Soft Tencel Cotton sheet collection is another innovation in sleep-facing design, which combines Tencel and cotton to “redefine softness and drape” according to Jo Ross, the brand’s general manager of design.

Ashley & Co believe your bedroom should hold sentimentality and familiarity (Ashley & Co) (Ashley & Co)

My night time routine revolves heavily around my bedside table. A bedside table provides a great platform for styling, especially in the wake of the “shelfie”, where you can stack books, maybe a candle, and any essential oils or relaxing aids. Vinterior is a great website for sourcing vintage and antique furniture, and the brand’s bedside table is certainly a highlight.

Sandrine Zhang Ferron, founder and CEO at Vinterior, believes that the furniture you source for your bedroom should hold sentimentality and familiarity to create the optimum relaxing atmosphere. She explains: “Unearthing something one-of-a-kind for your home – a chair, a lamp, a sideboard – is a wonderful experience. Vintage pieces are special in this regard. They are steeped in history and will become part of your own story too. Your bedroom should reflect what you love, with each individual piece coming together to create a haven completely unique to you.”

When styling your bedside table, incorporate fragrance. When choosing candles or diffusers, select smells you find relaxing, such as lavender, chamomile or ylang ylang and ensure the votive or receptacle is aesthetically pleasing. Premium scent company, Ashley & Co, prides itself not only on the architecture of the scents it creates, but of the vessels too.

The New Zealand-based brand’s founder, Jackie Ashley, believes that “scenting your surroundings should play a part in overall wellbeing”. She says: “Even simple tasks, like lighting a candle every evening can help you switch off and prepare for a good night’s sleep.” You can also make great use of the scent selector tool on the website to ensure the products you choose will set the right mood for you.
