If you’ve lost your yogi mojo over the festive period, we find that a fresh pair of leggings – which fit and flatter perfectly – can really give us the much-needed motivation to get back on the mat.

But as some leggings can stretch into hundreds of pounds, it’s important you only part with your cash for the perfect pair.

We tried these yoga pants out in a variety of low-impact exercise classes, including pilates, barre and of course yoga. If they passed that test we also wanted to see how they washed, sticking them on a cold wash after class.

When putting our leggings to the test we were looking for styles that were completely squat-proof (no one needs to see our knickers, thank you), didn’t bunch or sag and felt comfortable to move in. Waistbands needed to stay put – leaving us feeling smooth and supported.

We asked our panel of wearers what they look for in a pair of yoga leggings, and we felt it was Abi Nolan from Supply Yoga (a social purpose yoga studio based in Clapton, London) who hit the nail on the head.

She said: “I like my leggings to be high-waisted and flexible so I can move for a full hour without adjusting – and black – I only wear black!”

While you might be feeling more adventurous in your sartorial decisions, we can all agree on the rest. As mentioned, a good pair of leggings can be quite an investment, although we’re pleased to bring you good quality styles from as little as £25.

If you do have a little more to spend, you can expect some of the more expensive styles to last years.

So whatever your budget, these downward dog proof pants will take you from the barre to brunch while looking effortlessly stylish.

The verdict: Yoga pants

If you like to feel sculpted and supported, we think Sweaty Betty’s leggings offer the best bang for your buck – they last forever and have never let us down. We were also delighted with our pair from LNDR which, although slightly more expensive, were smart enough to wear throughout the day, whether yoga was on the cards or not.
