Babygrows are a staple item for any baby’s wardrobe but have you thought about switching to organic the next time you put one in your shopping basket?

Not only are organic babygrows super soft on your little one’s skin and free of nasty (and potentially toxic) chemicals but they’re also great for our environment too.

“When you choose organic for your baby, you are supporting a way of producing clothes that is better for workers and better for the environment; since organic cotton uses 62 per cent less energy to produce,” explains Sarah Jupp, business development manager for Soil Association.

It’s fantastic to see more and more brands choosing to use organic materials but it can make shopping around that little bit trickier.

If you want to be sure the product your buying is truly organic, look out for the organic logo or learn more from the two independent organic certifications in the UK, The Soil Association Certification and the Global Organic Textile Standard.

We’ve tested the newest organic clothing brands for ourselves; trialling a range of organic babygrows and rating them in terms of price, design, comfort, production methods and credentials.

You can trust our independent reviews. We may earn commission from some of the retailers, but we never allow this to influence selections, which are formed from real-world testing and expert advice. This revenue helps to fund journalism across The Independent.

Set up by two mums on the hunt for the ideal zip up babygrow, Skippy Lou offers a small collection of beautifully minimalistic white babygrows-all made from 100 per cent organic cotton. What’s more, its lightweight feel makes it perfect for summer nights when you want to keep your baby cool. The personalised option (you can choose to have a name, initials or message embroidered on selected babygrows) makes this one an ideal gift for a newborn.

MORI grey zip-up sleepsuit: £32.50, MORI

With a combination of 70 per cent bamboo and 30 per cent organic cotton, babygrows don’t get much more comfortable than this one. This simple zip-up sleepsuit comes in seven different colours and patterns but this grey option is a great gender neutral choices. For those who prefer it, MORI also makes a front-opening sleepsuit version; using conveniently placed poppers for easy access to the nappy area without disturbing your baby. Our tester reported that it washed great and their baby slept soundly in it but did note sizing was on the generous side so it may well be worth ordering a size down. If you plan to make multiple purchases from Mori, it could be worth signing up to its Sleep Club which offers a hefty discount.

The sizes of this sleepsuit are great too; it fits true to size and offers both smaller ranges (such as 0-1 month, 1-2 months) and, unlike most in our roundup, premature sizes too.

This organic romper is classic in every sense of the word: coming in three classic colours (blue, pink and neutral beige), simple button design and elegant pocket detail at the front and back of the vest. The Little Green Sheep 100% organic baby sleepsuit: From £9.95, The Little Green Sheep

Less than £10 is great value for a standard babygrow-let alone one made with 100 per cent cotton. Yet The Little Green Sheep’s organic sleepsuit offers just that (with 0-3 months £9.95 and the next size up, 3-6 months priced at £11.95). H&M sweatshirt all-in-one suit: H&M, £9.99

It’s fantastic to see organic baby clothes making their way to the high street; with H&M’s Conscious collection offering a plethora of sustainably made items; which contain at least 50 per cent recycled and organic materials. This pretty in pink sweatshirt is a thicker material than most in our roundup; making it ideal for winter and the smaller size ranges (such as 1-2 months or 2-4 months) are great for finding the perfect fit. At under £10 (and with babygrows in their range as low as £5.99), it shows you don’t need to spend a fortune to shop more sustainably, however, as you might expect for the price tag, H&Ms range doesn’t yet use 100 per cent organic cotton. While it’s still a step in the right direction, H&M still has a long way to go to be on par with other brand featured here.
